General Responsibilities:

Plan, direct and supervise servicing of the water main and its appurtenances in the distribution system (Raw and Potable Water).  Maintain all fire hydrants within the BWW system.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Direct and supervise crews constructing or maintaining standard fittings associated with water mains and potable water. 
  • Manage the completion of daily worksheets to install domestic residential water taps by coordinating crews for materials.
  • Enter material work orders in SAP to be filled by the Warehouse team for crews to pick up to complete the work. Assist in maintaining and creating purchase requisitions.
  • Coordinate the work of field crews with other departments, city and state officials and utilities.
  • Oversee and monitor day-to-day construction operations and fill in where necessary to ensure proper completion of work.
  • Maintain necessary records such as operational or environmental data, work order requests, time confirmation (IW41), valve book piping drawings to determine valve locations, worksheets and leak reports.
  • Read, review and interpret blueprints, specifications, engineering drawings and grade sketches to determine work requirements and measure work site dimensions.
  • Notify management of water main shutdowns and arrange timing or timeline with affected customers.  
  • Responsible for right-of-way maintenance.
  • Install fire protection connections, domestic service, combined service and fire hydrants.
  • Supervise lowering water mains under pressure and salvaging water mains, valves and hydrants.
  • Calculate the requirements and requisition concrete, road gravel, fill sand and asphalt.
  • Install small and large taps with a large tapping machine and flush mains as needed.
  • Operate electronic devices in locating and marking underground water pipes, valve connections, telephone and electric cables and gas lines.
  • Investigate and react to indications of problems with tank levels.
  • Interact professionally with customers to resolve or address any concerns or questions and take ownership to get the customer to the right area within the company if needed.
  • Oversee contractors include the following: 
    •  On-call situations response and authorization of construction activities during this time  
    • Estimate construction project costs.
    • Evaluate construction projects to determine compliance with external standards or regulations.
    • Evaluate projects to determine compliance with technical specifications.
    • Inspect completed work to ensure proper installation.

  • Perform quarterly inspections of all facilities to verify that the grounds, structures and facilities are adequately maintained.
  • Operate the assigned vehicle, keep it clean and report all mechanical problems. Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and safety policies and procedures when driving company vehicles.
  • On-call 24 hours and expected to work extended hours as needed to support the business. 
  • Work an on-call rotating schedule outside the regular schedule on a rotating basis.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Ensure all organizational policies and guidelines are adhered to and administered correctly, including the HR Management Guide, Employee Handbook, reviewing and approving timesheets, expense reports, complying with applicable employment laws, purchasing guidelines, bid law, etc.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required

Certifications

Valid Driver’s License required
Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) class A preferred
ADEM Grade I Certification preferred but must obtain within 6 months
Qualified Credentialed Inspector (QCI) Certification required, or ability to obtain in 6 months
GO Leadership Development Program completion within 12 months of the promotion date

Experience:

Five (5) years of construction and maintenance (leak) experience required. Team Lead experience or other demonstrated leadership skills.

Supervision:

1-16 employees
