General Responsibilities:
Conducts field investigations in the BWWB service area for customer performs complaint calls, collect samples, perform designated field testing and routine residential and/or commercial flushing at fire hydrants, meters and blow-offs. Unidirectional and conventional flushing used to maintain good water quality in the distribution system. The benefits of flushing including preservation, improvement of water quality in the control of bacterial re-growth, high turbidity, taste and odor, discolored, low chlorine residuals, sediments, and any other particulate matter.
Essential Job Functions:
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures to ensure processes are handled safely and appropriately
- Coordinate the installation and/or relocation of the Water Board's automated flushing units, flush points, and other necessary points to transport and deliver clear and clean drinking water
- Collect samples as needed or requested at a customer's resident or business, Lead and Copper projects, work special projects with the Lab, System Development Department, Maintenance, and our Consecutive Systems These projects serve as the first line of defense and emergency response to providing security and protection to the water system
- Flush hydrants, meter settings, and sample stations, advanced maintenance flushing equipment, to operate, maintain and oversee the installation of automatic flushing devices and sample stations Making sure storm drains and natural water courses can handle the flow Record all characteristics of the water quality information for input into the Thor data base; utilize computers and other standard office equipment as needed to complete daily and weekly flushing work reports
- Notify customers both residential and commercial individually as needed within the perimeter area to inform of the emergency situation or the change in their water quality
- Assist the Superintendent of Water Quality Operations or District Supervisors as needed to restore water quality and service after main breaks or following main rehabilitation projects
- Direct the expended water from flushing away from traffic, pedestrians, underground utility vaults, private lands and natural waterways Flushing diffusers or bazookas are required for dechlorination with sodium sulfite or ascorbic acid which will be utilized at all times
- Perform all maintenance on our equipment and the plus automatic flushing units across the system
- Must have a working knowledge of the distribution system; be familiar with line, detail, valve, and Jefferson County maps Locate hydrants, valves, automatic flushing units, sample stations, and water mains through-out the system for accurate and effective flushing
- Required to maintain and set-up automatic flushing units, sampling stations, repair or submit work orders to repair meters and hydrants reporting water main problems and notifying superiors of any irregularities detected

Education:
High school graduate or equivalent experience required.
Certifications
Experience:
One (1) year of construction, maintenance and/or valve experience needed due to frequent repairs made to flush-points, blow-offs, valve replacements, HG2 service and rebuilding flush-points. Customer service training or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Demonstrates ability to accurately use line maps and detail pages to comprehend and carry out written and oral instructions. Must have basic word processing and good math skills including the ability to make computer entries, use spreadsheet programs and create correspondence as required with the ability to progress to higher levels of computer skills as needed. They must have excellent technical customer service skills and the ability to resolve customer complaints. The individual must have excellent oral and written communication skills, also patience when dealing with difficult customers. This position requires frequent contact with customers daily at their business or resident while improving the water quality throughout the distribution system

Physical Demands:
- Position requires driving, sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, kneeling, bending, lifting and carrying supplies weighing 70 pounds or more in the performance of job duties. May be required to use chemicals, enter confined spaces, drive motorized vehicles and use heavy equipment and respond to after-hours emergency calls.

Working Environment:
- Primarily work in the field environment, occasionally in the office as needed to fill a void due to an absence in the department.
- While in the field, employee will be subjected to various types of weather on the job sites, when handling water quality complaints and distribution system emergencies.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals daily during the performance of their duties
- Required to work scheduled on call 24/7 as needed to handle customer complaints and distribution system emergencies.
