General Responsibilities

Plan, organize and implement survey projects to have all BWW properties surveyed and marked, including bulk properties, rights-of-way, easements, tank lots and out-parcels.  Provide surveying needs to other departments within the organization.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Plan and assign work of land survey technicians.
  2. Coordinate and assign work to survey crews and related staff regarding land surveying and property issues.
  3. Recommend, coordinate, and review the work completed by outside survey firms and other related contractors.
  4. Design the fieldwork and select known survey reference points to determine the precise location of all-important features in the survey area.
  5. Prepare plats, maps, reports and legal descriptions of survey findings.
  6. Prepare extensive records and data logs of survey projects.
  7. Research public records, maps, deeds, and legal descriptions to determine property ownership.
  8. Maintain survey equipment and prepare specifications necessary for purchasing new equipment. 
  9. Write legal descriptions and prepare plats and maps of easements, right of ways and property parcels. Verify the accuracy of the data, prepare the plat, and record the survey’s results. 
  10. Coordinate with engineers the needed information to design various waterworks projects such as pipelines, pump stations, and pressure-reducing stations. 
  11. Obtain field data, elevations and topography, plot sketches to assist in calculating and planning, perform field and office calculations.
  12. Operate all Trimble Robotics, GPS, and Data Collection equipment and software. Operate all other survey equipment, specifically Topcon Total Station, GPS, and Data Collector; Carlson GPS and Data Collector; and Nikon Total Station. 
  13. Operate survey, drafting, GNSS-processing, and Photogrammetric software; specifically, Carlson Survey with IntelliCAD, Carlson GIS, Carlson GNSS, Trimble Business Center (TBC), and AutoCAD.
  14. Supervise the setting of land boundaries and GPS monuments.

  1. Generate maps of surveyed properties or equivalent.
  2. Acquire real property, rights-of-way, and easements to build waterworks projects. 
  3. Perform SAP functions such as entering requisitions and requesting purchase orders.
  4. Create and maintain records for annual budgetary items. 
  5. Operate the assigned vehicle, keep it clean and report all mechanical problems. Maintain a valid driver’s license.
  6. Adhere to all traffic laws and safety policies and procedures when driving company vehicles.
  7. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Ensure all organizational policies and guidelines are adhered to and administered correctly, including the HR Management Guide, Employee Handbook, reviewing and approving timesheets, and expense reports, complying with applicable employment laws, purchasing guidelines, bid law, etc.
  8. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  9.   10. This includes but is not limited to participating in improvement teams, recommending and implementing improvement ideas, and participating in training and other activities to keep up to date on processes, information, etc.

  12. Maintain and protect sensitive and private information by keeping employee records confidential in accordance with HIPAA, local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  13. Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Mathematics or related field required

Experience

Four (4) years of experience in survey practices, including mapping, deeds, and legal descriptions required.  Knowledge of survey equipment (Total Station and GPS Systems) required.  Team Lead experience or other demonstrated leadership skills.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Experience in environmental management preferred.  

Knowledge of laws and codes, methods, principles and practices related to land surveying and experience including:

  • ALTA/ACSM standards 
  • Architectural and engineering principles and practices applied in the location, design, inspection and construction of waterworks projects
  • Current developments and literature in the field of land surveying 
  • Survey instruments and their proper use
  • Property ownership from researching plat books, deeds, and maps
  • Handheld calculators, data collectors, and personal computers related to land surveying
  • Complex mathematical calculations related to land surveying
  • Civil engineering plans, maps, and specifications
  • Maintain and complete accurate files and records
  • Supervision of subordinates in a proper and safe work method
  • Effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, and the public

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Alabama Professional Surveyor license required or obtained within 12 months of hire date
  • Participation in industry-related organizations such as the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors or the National Society of Professional Surveyors required
