General Responsibilities:
Under direct supervision to work as the assistant filter plant operator and operator of a state-approved water purification plan under ADEM Administrative Code Division 7 Rules and Regulations governing public water supplies.
Essential Job Functions:
- Operate filter plant; one shift per week and relieve all operators as needed
- Perform the role of the Senior Operator as needed
- Assist the Filter Plant Operator in maintaining compliance with the Alabama Safe Drinking Water Act to ensure Public Health and Safety in operating a state-approved treatment plant
- Receive chemicals and make proper chemical feed settings and ensure feeders are correctly functioning
- Assist operator in collecting water samples and performing routine chemical, bacteriological and physical tests
- Maintain proper training and certification under Section R of the Federal Clean Air Act and utilize this knowledge and training when handling chlorine and related equipment
- Take readings, keep logs and assist with data collection and data entry on operations and equipment per ADEM Rules and Regulations ie, Turbidity records and Turbidimeters maintenance
- Assist in maintaining premises and all equipment
- Must be able to successfully pass a respiratory, facial protective fit test for the handling of chemicals this may include no facial hair for the protective fit test to be practical
- Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of college or technical school preferred.
Certifications
Experience:
Two (2) years of water treatment systems equipment used to operate filter plants are preferred. Strong communication skills are required to communicate technical or operational information and prepare written reports. Work autonomously without a shift supervisor. Four-five years of experience in a state-approved water purification plant under ADEM Administrative Code Division 7 Rules and Regulation governing public water suppliers preferred.

Working Environment:
Loud noise; indoors and outdoors, subject to the risks associated with hazardous-material response, emergency response, chemical spills, main breaks, and inclement weather, including ice, snow, tornados, and hurricanes. Must be able to deal with the stress associated with the position.
